Getting around in China's large urban areas has been one of the biggest headaches for people living and working there. Over the last thirty years the transport infrastructure has failed to keep up with the massive increase in car ownership. In some cities the traffic problems and pollution have become so great that car access to the cities is rationed. But the old forms of transport, bicycles and scooters, have remained relatively unaffected. The electric scooter is, environmentally sound and one of the best ways of getting about - but it requires a certain nerve and technique.
